Exciting, Insider Expert, Career Speed Dating Is A Success

Career Speed Dating Success

In an effort to be creative in these most difficult of times, Bentley University recently offered a virtual Career Speed Dating Workshop for students and alumni to gain career search insights, hone their resumes and boost LinkedIn profiles. In these one-on-one, 10-minute chat sessions, Bentley students and grads were able to gain a few pointers from experienced alumni to aid in their career path through this fast-paced event presented on the Brazen platform.

Bonnie and Paul, co-founders of of Passion Placement were thrilled to participate and bring their expertise into the Bentley “virtual resume room” and through this, fast and furious format, were able to assist numerous participants with solid suggestions on how to improve their resumes from formatting, to more effective summaries, accomplishment statements and other important resume details.

The participants were a diverse group from across the spectrum from students to alumni in mid-career, to advanced, with some rethinking their work goals and looking for guidance to make a move to a position aligned with their passion.

“It was particularly special for me to be able to give back to my alma mater.  I’m hoping this will become a regular event for us.  It was really fun and rewarding to be able to help so many in such a short period of time”, said Bonnie Brown.

In terms of sharing specific advice for creating a great resume, start by asking co-workers, teachers and others what they see as your best skills and successes.  You will definitely learn something and will gain beneficial insights and results that could be very useful in preparing your resume summary and, perhaps even more so, accomplishment statements.

Avoid just listing the elements of your job description when defining your experience with an employer.  Instead you want to make accomplishment statements about the benefits you brought to each employer during your tenure and have them align with the position you are seeking. You need to differentiate yourself.

Look for keywords in your target job posting and compare them with your resume.  Add the position keywords to improve your odds that software (ATS – applicant tracking systems) don’t eliminate your application before it gets to a human for review.
