Associate Director / Director, Corporate Development 88 views

Boston, MA

Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is a horizontal platform that enables our customers to create products that help solve the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. We are poised to disrupt multiple industries by leveraging our innovative data, automation, and scale capabilities in biological engineering.
Ginkgo recently raised $1.6B and a major use of proceeds is a much more proactive Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) strategy. The Corporate Development team at Ginkgo is a small, fast-paced, high-performing group responsible for sourcing, evaluating, negotiating and executing M&A transactions and investments. This team is central to Ginkgo’s continued growth. We work closely with senior leadership to guide company strategy and lead all aspects of identifying, evaluating, and executing transactions that have a significant impact on the overall direction of the company.
As a core member of this team, you will help identify and lead transformative acquisitions and investments that accelerate or increase the likelihood of Ginkgo achieving its strategic objectives. You will report to the VP, Corporate Development. Additionally, you’ll work with cross-functional leaders to help establish strategic plans, buy vs. build analyses, and define sourcing priorities across a diverse set of M&A focus areas, as well as develop prioritized target lists, and cultivate strong relationships in those spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support M&A deals to expand Ginkgo’s presence in new and existing end markets and to strengthen Ginkgo’s technology portfolio. This includes evaluation of business model attractiveness, strategic/financial analysis, valuation, due diligence, negotiation and integration
  • Identify, evaluate and recommend companies and technologies for Ginkgo to consider for M&A, in collaboration with our Technical and Commercial teams.
  • Nurture and build relationships with leadership at emerging and established companies from a variety of industries, as well as with investment banking and venture capital firms
  • Serve as a strategic partner across our organization, coordinating M&A across teams, including program management, technology, commercial, operations, finance, accounting, and legal
  • Refine and implement the processes and analytical frameworks for evaluating and executing M&A opportunities and investments and manage the pipeline (for context, some deals we’ve executed include FGen, Dutch DNA, Novogy, Warp Drive Bio, Gen9, and we’re thinking even bigger now – we just announced a planned transaction to carve out a large facility from Bayer Crop Science!)
  • Who you are

  • You are accountable – when you say you’ve got the ball, you don’t drop it.
  • You’re biased toward action and making things happen, with the knowledge and drive to follow through.
  • You have a passion for learning about new industries, companies, and people – and can get up to speed on new areas extremely quickly.
  • You’re motivated by the exhilarating and terrifying blend of getting thrown into new situations, and can easily pivot and adapt to changing priorities.
  • You’re organized and resourceful – and are excellent at seeing what needs to get done, and getting it done efficiently.
  • You’re able to successfully design and implement new strategies and processes, and rally a cross-functional team around those ideas.
  • You have strong communication skills, and are adept at speaking your mind, asking questions, and pushing back when needed.
  • You’re a collaborative, supportive team player and enjoy getting to know who you work with, both as people and as colleagues.
  • You’ve accumulated (and continue to expand) a strong and diverse network of relationships throughout your career, particularly within the investment and startup communities.
  • Finally, you’re excited about Ginkgo and eager to help us achieve our mission –  and you think biology is, well, pretty cool.
  • Desired experience

  • 7+ years of relevant M&A deal-making experience, whether in investment banking, corporate development, private equity, venture capital, or otherwise, preferably including some prior experience within a startup or fast paced environment.
  • Ideally, work experience and knowledge of the life sciences industry and/or biotech. If you have working knowledge of the synthetic biology industry, even better!
  • Demonstrated experience working on sourcing, evaluating, and executing successful M&A deals.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional senior executives in a fast-paced and ambiguous environment
  • Proficient in financial modeling, valuation, and broad quantitative analysis with a familiarity of basic accounting principles

We also feel that it’s important to point out the obvious here – there’s a serious lack of diversity in our industry, and that needs to change. Our goal is to help drive that change. Ginkgo is deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its practices, especially when it comes to growing our team. Our culture promotes inclusion and embraces how rewarding it is to work with people from all walks of life.
We’re developing a powerful biological engineering platform, so we must remain mindful of the many ways our technology can – and will – impact people around the world. We care about how our platform is used, and having a diverse team to build it gives us the best chance that it’s something we’ll be proud of as it continues to grow. Therefore, it’s critical that we incorporate the diverse voices and visions of all those who play a role in the future of biology.
It is the policy of Ginkgo Bioworks to provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and employment applicants.
