Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms. Today, our foundry is developing over 40 different organisms to make different products across multiple industries.
Because it touches nearly every part of the foundry, the Automation Team is integral to Ginkgo’s vision for the future, and we interface directly with Ginkgo’s scientists, engineers, and digital technologies teams at every stage of development. We are designing, building, testing, and deploying the processes, software, hardware, digital infrastructure, and data and metric collection systems required to scale (and improve!) biological workflows using our fleet of robotic systems.
As an Automation Software Engineer, you’ll be working on Agile teams hand in hand with biologists, hardware engineers, software developers, and other engineers to co-develop the software infrastructure that underpins the Foundry.
Our tech stacks include Python, Scala, Docker, REST, ROS 2, Postgres, and customized AWS cloud infrastructure offerings alongside other modern tools and frameworks. Software development on the automation team is varied, with some engineers working on building out the AWS-based infrastructure needed to scalably integrate our vast number of robotic systems into Ginkgo’s custom data infrastructure, others working on translating biological processes and intent into schedulable workflows, and others working on device driver development, image processing and analysis, and device orchestration systems. We are looking to hire engineers with a desire to learn and grow in any of the above skill sets (and beyond)!
Writing software to drive integration and/or operation of laboratory instruments and robotics within Ginkgo’s digital infrastructure
Building infrastructure aimed at integrating and supporting integrated robotic systems for executing high-throughput processes
Implementing and deploying software that addresses current needs of Ginkgo bioengineers. These solutions could be APIs, microservices, standalone tools, user facing web applications, data pipelines, etc.
Work as a member of an agile team, attend scrum meetings, and review code produced by your peers.
Write automated tests for your solution and oversee its deployment.
Monitor the production environment to detect and address customers’ issues.
Desired Experience and Capabilities
BS, MS, or PhD in engineering or equivalent
Prior experience in software development, especially pertaining to hardware control and/or full stack development
Experience with code management systems, CI/CD, AWS, or any other cloud experience a plus
Familiarity with biological workflows and/or laboratory automation systems a strong plus
