Who We Are:
Founded in 2013, Thistle is an early stage food-tech startup empowering our customers to get and stay healthy while improving the sustainability of our food system. We deliver delicious, organic, healthy, plant-forward meals, snacks, and cold-pressed juices to customers on the West Coast who want to put their nutrition on auto-pilot.
We don’t want to be just another food delivery startup or meal-kit company. Our focus is on the health and happiness of our customers, and we are revolutionizing how fresh, nutritious, high-quality food is purchased, manufactured, and delivered at scale.
Thistle is a remote-first company with much of the team based in the Bay Area. We are backed by some fantastic investors who have joined us on our journey to fundamentally change how food is designed, prepared, and distributed to improve human and planetary health. Our goal is to build a business that lasts for decades, taking a long-term approach over easy, short-term wins. We’ve invested in our team, business, and infrastructure for almost eight years and have laid the foundation for thoughtful expansion through culture and product that instills pride in all involved.
About the Role:
We are looking for a CFO to join our team and manage and grow our finance operations. The CFO will be responsible for driving the metrics, processes, and forecasting to support our growth and decision making, ultimately heavily impacting the strategic direction of the company and ensuring its financial success. This role will lead the finance and accounting functions, ensuring that the quality and accuracy of financial reporting are maintained to our company and investor standards and in accordance with applicable accounting standards. You will manage (and continue to build) a team to execute on the FP&A and business operations required for success. You will be a strategic partner across functions to empower understanding of scenarios and drive key decisions, and measure progress against goals and budgets.
What You’ll Do
Manage all financial and accounting functions, including financial modeling, multi-year forecasting, analysis, budgeting, accounting, management of receivables and payables, payroll and expense management, cash management, and tax compliance and strategy.
Assess and evaluate financial performance with regard to long-term operational goals, budgets, and forecasts. Provide insight and recommendations to both short-term and long-term growth plans.
Create financial and decision-making models to develop meaningful insights and actionable recommendations to help drive business decisions — and then help execute on them!
Build a world-class finance organization by hiring, inspiring, and leading a strong and diverse team. Coach and develop the team to meet business priorities and goals.
Foster an exciting, collaborative growth culture and get hands-on when needed to help our team build capabilities.
Deliver clear management and Board reporting that highlights drivers of forecast variances, deeper business insight, and future risks and opportunities.
Effectively interface with all levels of the organization to share financial data and updates on goals on a regular basis.
Responsible for equity, debt, and banking functions, including cap table management, debt strategy, and financial institution/investment banking relationships.
Support the CEO, COO, and Board to position Thistle for successful fundraising and/or IPO in the future.
What You’ll Bring
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or equivalent; CPA and/or MBA strongly preferred.
12+ years of progressive experience including experience with significant growth, ideally coming from the $50-250M stage vs joining at $1B only or $0-10M only. Experience managing corporate finances in or above the $200-400M range.
6+ years experience hiring, mentoring, and leading finance teams. You love building high-performing teams and will do whatever it takes to make you successful while also keeping the enterprise’s holistic success your topmost priority. You love empowering and supporting your team in solving complex problems.
Strong analytical, modeling, and problem-solving skills with an ability to map innovative and clear solutions to complex problems while managing multiple projects.
Strong understanding of consumer e-commerce and subscription business models.
Experience in a high-volume, high-growth manufacturing/production environment (preferred).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly present financial information to all levels of management.
A passion for food, health, and wellness.
