Remote/Boston, MA

Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our mission to “make biology easier to engineer” is poised to disrupt multiple industries by leveraging our innovative data, automation, and scale capabilities in biological engineering.
Ginkgo recently raised $1.6B and a major use of proceeds is a much more proactive merger and acquisition (M&A) strategy. Ginkgo is building the industry-standard platform for synthetic biology across all end markets, and this role will be focused on helping to accelerate our initiatives in certain of those markets, strengthen our technology portfolio, and continue to build a world-class team.  Successful integration of new companies is critical to a value-accretive M&A strategy and we’re looking for a collaborative, resourceful, and accountable team member to lead our integration efforts, reporting to our SVP, Corporate Development.  Specifically, you’ll set integration strategy, helping ensure that Ginkgo is able to execute against our investment thesis and will lead cross-functional internal and external teams in the late stages of diligence and through integration planning and execution, helping ensure we create real value from these transactions and that newly integrated team members are able to hit the ground running.  You’ll also be responsible for building a repeatable and scalable playbook for integrations going forward.  Given that deals ebb and flow, this role will be able to flex between diligence efforts and integrations, depending on the stage of the pipeline / priority deals during any given period of time.

  • Develop a deep understanding of a transaction’s investment thesis to ensure integration plans support that operating model
  • Take responsibility for the operational and strategic direction of the integration management office, ensuring people engagement, retention and ongoing development
  • Develop and drive the agenda for integration matters, which includes coordinating business units, the IMO, and formulating recommendations for senior management and the Board
  • Oversee the integration risk management process, identifying these risks and issues that need to be escalated to senior management and/or the Board
  • Interact with the business to identify key hot spots and potential areas of concern, linking those impacts to other parts of the business who need to know
  • Actively follow up on issues/risks/actions, maintaining the overall Issues and Risk Registry, escalating where necessary
  • Provide relevant and timely stakeholder communications to all levels of management (formal and informal reporting) on the status and progress of the integration plans, costs and benefits
  • Understand, develop and implement best practice IMO processes, including development of a scalable playbook for future transactions
  • Oversee Project Manager and Third Party Advisors
  • Key Challenges

  • Ability to oversee multiple transactions occurring simultaneously
  • Need to keep busy cross-functional team leads focused on the integration agenda
  • Clear understanding at all times of integration priorities vs. the business priorities and the ability to work out the impact on either if there are any significant changes
  • The constant need to align the integration initiatives with company vision.
  • Ability to be flexible as priorities change over time
  • Ensure the integration team and the IMO specifically is not seen to be creating an extra level of complexity or bureaucracy (reputation for “helpful process” vs. “process for process sake”)
  • Minimum Requirements

  • Strong experience in project management
  • Strong ability to influence management and key stakeholders, gaining buy in where required
  • Strong experience in stakeholder management, ability to provide detailed and accurate high level reporting to management and the Board
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Good experience in understanding cross business unit / project impacts
  • Demonstrated relevant experience in managing significant organisational change over a period time
  • Strong experience in driving, managing and influencing an integration agenda
  • Understanding of deal model financials
  • Very strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Consistent attention to detail
  • Possess a strong background in project management and have a good understanding of these concepts and their practical application
  • Good leadership skills and a history of running successful teams
  • Good negotiation and influencing skills to achieve desired outcomes
  • Ability to build good working relationships with all levels of management
  • Possess ability to work confidently in circumstances of continual change and ambiguity
  • Work well under pressure and where there are conflicting priorities
  • Posses flexibility given the complexity and type of change the business will be experiencing
  • Possess strong organisational, time and self management skills
  • Understanding of the biotechnology industry would be an advantage but not essential
