The Opportunity: 

Culture Biosciences is looking for an Electrical Engineer. Your focus will be on the design, development and deployment of our first-of-type laboratory automation systems from concept to production. Systems under development include benchtop exploratory bioreactors and single axis robots to full scale production reactors and automation systems.  


What you'll do:

  • Exhibit expertise in mixed-signal PCB design, including component selection, schematic creation, and board layout (including best practices)
  • Engineer concepts, architectures, designs, prototypes, tests, and analyses
  • Drive products through design, build, bring up, verification, and validation
  • Support sustaining, new product development, and new product introduction activities
  • Provide technical expertise and review of the team's design concepts, schematics, and other technical documents
  • (Technical) Project leadership, provide guidance on technical priorities and plans
  • Work with the software and engineering teams to improve current and/or design new embedded architecture
  • Maintain BOMs and documentation in a product lifecycle management tool
  • Generate technical documentation where necessary
  • Debug and perform root cause analysis of observed electrical failures and develop robust fixes

Projects on our horizon:

  • Control system for new bioreactors (bench-top and pilot scale)
  • Sensor/actuator integration
  • Precision temperature control
  • Actuator power/control

About you:

  • BSEE with 5+ years’ experience, preferably in startups, and/or consulting
  • Systems architecture, integration, and hands-on design skills with MCUs, sensors, motor controls
  • Detailed understanding of common buses and communications protocols for interfacing to various sensors and peripherals (I2C, SPI, UART, etc.).
  • Ability to bring-up, troubleshoot, characterize, and collect data of sensors, circuits, and system level designs
  • Knowledge of Altium or similar ECAD tools for drafting schematics and managing PCB layout
  • Experience with BOM management and revision control tools (Arena, Github)
  • Background in managing and troubleshooting Prototype and NPI cycles for low-medium volume automation equipment
  • Broad, cross-functional understanding of product execution, as well as ability to see downstream effects of design decisions, perform risk assessment, and develop mitigation plans

Location & Schedule: 

  • This is a remote-flexible position. We’re looking for someone based in the San Francisco Bay Area who is able to work in person at our office in South San Francisco at least 2-3  days per week.
