At MyForest Foods, we grow and harvest mycelium in vertical farms, producing large structures that resemble whole cuts of meat in as little as 12 days. (And if you’re familiar with typical meat alternatives, you know that a “whole cut” is something truly special!) We then slice these meaty “cuts” and season them to perfection in a traditional brine recipe. MyBacon® is our first of many mycelium-based meatless alternatives. It’s as realistic as plant-based bacon gets; people are blown away by how satisfying and similar it is to pork bacon.

Due to its DELICIOUS nature, MyBacon demand is sky-high! As a result, our business is growing rapidly. As we prepare to take our production to a national scale, many exciting career opportunities have unfolded, including that of Shift Lead in our vertical farm, known as Swersey Silos.

About the role:

The Farm Shift lead at Swersey Silos is primarily responsible for the oversight of work direction, professional development and training, performance management, and day to day support of the fill or harvest at an indoor mushroom mycelium growing farm. This role provides consistent and fair development opportunities and expectations for all operators on the Swersey Silos team.

In this role, you’ll report to—and work collaboratively with—the general manager of our indoor mushroom mycelium growing farm to align tactical decisions with strategic goals, address staffing and resource needs, employee relations, and policy enforcement.

You’ll also help to direct and drive the business goals of the team to ensure efficient and effective operations.

As a supervisor, this role is focused on overseeing the team’s safe completion of the filling or harvesting process, as well as lean manufacturing practices.

Essential Role Functions:

  • Ensure safe and efficient filling or harvesting at Swersey Silos
  • Supervise and direct the work of Swersey Silos fill or harvest team members (under 10 individuals) including but not limited to, regular 1-on-1 employee meetings, task and opportunity setting, goal setting and reviews, performance management, talent acquisition, addressing conflicts, and giving and receiving regular constructive feedback
  • Facilitate team meetings
  • Identify individual and team-wide development opportunities, communicate development needs, and support training and advancement where development is identified
  • Continuous improvement of team members and processes
  • Collaborate with Swersey Silos leadership team for growth of team
  • Analyze staffing capacity and level-set workloads for individual contributors
  • Contribute to hiring strategy, conduct interviews and hire filling operators.
  • Provide training and support to team members, including development of training documentation, hands-on training, and performance assessments
  • Spends time on the floor, getting hands on with the team in order to get a first-hand understanding of the work and skills being demonstrated. This is a working foreperson job
  • May be required to manage projects, including planning and executing project deliverables through resource allocation and management, timeline reviews, meeting milestones and deadlines, and scope communications
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum qualifications/competencies (The must-haves)

Professional attributes:

  • Fully collaborative with other Swersey Silos Team Supervisors, able to present a consistent and equal supervisory practice for all team operators
  • Willing to negotiate on tactics and strategies with other Swersey Silos team Supervisors to achieve the best result for all operators
  • Sensitive to balancing the needs of the company with development and advancement desires and opportunities for substrate operators—this means making sure the less desirable tasks are fairly assigned and always get done, while development opportunities are also fairly available based on merit and interest, and are given appropriate time and support
  • An ability to effectively manage projects and project deliverables when needed

Education and Experience:

  • High School Education or higher
  • Experience leading teams or projects in industrial biotechnology, preferably at the scale-up stage


Preferred Qualifications and Competencies (The nice-to-haves)

  • Food and or aseptic technical training preferred
  • Some demonstrated safety experience preferred
  • Agricultural experience preferred
  • Heavy Machine operations preferred

Reports to: General Manager of Farm Operations

Classification: Exempt

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk.  The employee frequently is required to squat, use hands and fingers, handle objects or controls, talk and hear, reach with hands and arms.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and will occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.  This position will be regularly exposed to a manufacturing environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
