About the Role:

As a Head Grower at AppHarvest, you will be joining a team at the forefront of reinventing sustainable agriculture by leading all growing operations teams within the 60-acre hydroponic greenhouse facility. This position will be responsible for developing and training a team that is made up of Growers, Assistant Growers, and Crop Care Specialists as well as managing growing operations for tomatoes and vine crops for AppHarvest’s – 60 acre hydroponic controlled environment agriculture facilities. This role will be based in Eastern Kentucky.

What You’ll Do:

  • Manage and lead a staff of 250+ greenhouse staff
  • Oversee IPM manager to establish biological solutions for regional-specific pests and pathogens
  • Confirm the effective management of pest and disease control
  • Participate in budget preparation and develop a growing plan to meet production goals
  • Ensure that growing schedule maximizes production yield while minimizing expenses
  • Consult with Growers on matters including crop and climate registration data, scouting reports, food safety regulations compliance, health safety standards compliance, and the implementation plant health plan directives
  • Manage fertilization, irrigation, and climate control needs
  • Ensure the administration of soil, water, and disease tests as necessary and ensures that proper follow up actions are taken
  • Work with VP to maintain inventory of growing supplies
  • Oversee trials of new products prior to use within the facility
  • Manage recordkeeping of growing techniques to review and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Oversee and advise on the training of new employees and techniques

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, or equivalent experience
  • Experience growing tomatoes and or vine crops
  • Minimum ten year’s experience in horticulture
  • Previous experience as an Assistant or Head Grower in greenhouse growing facilities preferred
  • Knowledge of PRIVA and experience with technical greenhouse systems
  • Knowledge of horticultural pest and disease identification
  • Familiarity with industry food and health safety standards
  • Pesticide License or Assistant’s License
  • Advanced degree in Horticulture or Agriculture a plus
  • Ability to move/lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
