The State Affairs department, which ensures state directors provide local assistance and resources to celebrate all animals and protect them from cruelty all across the country, is looking for interns (click to view position description) to provide assistance on key projects necessary to the furtherance of legislative goals in a number of states.

Interns will have the opportunity to strengthen networking, communication, time management, and organizational skills; improve writing, research, data compilation, and editing abilities; gain leadership experience; gain a deeper understanding of numerous animal protection issues and how to be most effective as an animal advocate; and gain a familiarity with The HSUS’s major campaigns and mission as well as the ability to understand The HSUS’s policies and positions.

This internship is ideal for law, political science, and public policy students or anyone with a passion for making the difference in the lives of animals.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Assisting staff in facilitating communication with legislative offices
• Assisting in research projects
• Helping to implement campaigns such as the Puppy-friendly Pet Store initiative and the No Battery Cage Eggs campaign within various states
• Reaching out to animal shelters within the state to assist with relationship building and develop contact list
• Doing online research and commentary
• Letter-writing and outreach to the public
• Working with social media
• Helping to organize and carry out state “Lobby Day” events
• Increasing grassroots mobilization
• Performing miscellaneous tasks of an administrative nature

No specific academic major is required; interns must be at least 18 years of age. Preferred candidates will have a strong work ethic and an eagerness to take on any project. Commitment of time is 10-32 hours per week for 10-12 weeks. This internship is unpaid; however, course credit can be arranged.

Interns must pass a criminal background check and sign a waiver and release of liability. Opportunities are located in the various states listed above, and travel to state capitals may be required.
