Ginkgo is a publicly-held, well-funded, high-growth biotech company that is redesigning the living world to solve some of the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our mission to “make biology easier to engineer” is poised to disrupt multiple industries by leveraging our innovative data, automation, and scale capabilities in biological engineering. In light of Ginkgo’s ambitious growth plans, we are building out the Strategic Operations arm of our Commercial team and seek a passionate and collaborative leader with deep operations experience and a strong business acumen.
Beyond sales and account management, the Commercial team at Ginkgo plays a critical role in managing delivery of projects to our customers. In particular, the Commercial team is responsible for forecasting demand for our Foundry teams, driving forward the launch of new projects, prioritizing Foundry efforts in line with commercial priorities, and determining process improvements that support overall efficiency and utilization.
As a Commercial Operations Manager/Director/Associate Director, you will play a critical role in building and sustaining systematic processes that support these goals and others, working from both the strategic perspective to define our approach and the ongoing operational perspective to implement them.
Your work will be varied and high impact, requiring cross-functional work and collaboration that enable you to act as a change agent and ongoing operations leader. You will work closely with Alliance Managers to understand our customer needs, with Commercial team leadership to understand our business objectives, and with our Technical team to support ongoing processes. You will be both data and process driven, but balance the need for rigor with speed to conceive and implement high impact solutions. You bring a strong operations background and an acute business sense, and you will pair these to drive outcomes. All told, your role will be varied and high impact, with a chance to create major near and long-term benefits to Ginkgo and our customers.
Please note: This role has a requirement to be onsite at our Ginkgo Seaport offices in Boston, MA, at least 3 days per week, with the other 2 days being flexible (remote or in-office).
Design, launch and sustain systematic processes that are critical to commercial success at Ginkgo, including: how we plan and launch new cell programs, identifying capacity and demand shortfalls across foundry services, running S&OP processes, driving operational efficiencies, generating near term demand in coordination with Alliance Managers, and enabling rapid and effective prioritization
Work collaboratively across Ginkgo to define these processes and manage their ongoing operations
Support Program Leads to determine operational efficiency opportunities and propose solutions
Provide recommendations to Commercial and overall Ginkgo leadership on our ongoing Operations approaches and strategies
Run bespoke and high impact prioritization and problem solving sprints
Be an excellent communicator, synthesizing complex information from disparate sources into concise and clear narratives, both internally to Ginkgo and externally with other partners
Desired Experience and Capabilities
Bachelor’s degree (and depending on level will determine years of experience needed) with 3-10+ years (level dependent) of relevant work in a combination of operations and commercial roles (e.g. management consulting). MBA, consulting experience and/or PhD is a plus
2-3 years of biotechnology or other technical experience strongly preferred (in business or technical role)
Exceptional communication, organizational and problem solving skills
Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and mobilize people across the organization, and to learn quickly and thrive in a fast-paced environment

We also feel that it’s important to point out the obvious here – there’s a serious lack of diversity in our industry, and that needs to change. Our goal is to help drive that change. Ginkgo is deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its practices, especially when it comes to growing our team. Our culture promotes inclusion and embraces how rewarding it is to work with people from all walks of life.
We’re developing a powerful biological engineering platform, so we must remain mindful of the many ways our technology can – and will – impact people around the world. We care about how our platform is used, and having a diverse team to build it gives us the best chance that it’s something we’ll be proud of as it continues to grow. Therefore, it’s critical that we incorporate the diverse voices and visions of all those who play a role in the future of biology.
It is the policy of Ginkgo Bioworks to provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and employment applicants.
