Join our exceptional team as a Pilot Scale-Up Engineer to support the scale-up of our novel mushroom processes.  This position will be an integral part of the Pilot Plant team in Green Island, NY. The selected candidate will be involved in all aspects of scaling Ecovative’s mycelial-based technologies for multiple commercial applications and will be involved in the design/build and commissioning of new equipment as well as improving and maintaining existing equipment and infrastructure.

Ideal candidates will be familiar with industrial biotech and indoor agricultural engineering systems, have a broad skill set, and a hands-on approach. Candidates will have the ability to independently drive equipment improvement projects, support in commissioning new research or food manufacturing equipment, and generally bring engineering solutions of all types to the Pilot Plant team. They will have comfort with industrial controls, environmental control systems, and sanitary design principles, such as are found in industrial biotech industries like controlled environment agriculture, fermentation, plant tissue culture, and especially commercial mushroom growing. Ideal candidates will have worked in a food manufacturing environment.

ECOVATIVE’S PILOT SCALE-UP ENGINEER WILL:

  • Contribute heavily to the design, commissioning, and improvement of both research and production level indoor agricultural equipment for Ecovative’s proprietary modified mushroom farming process.

  • Hands-on engineering, mechatronics, sensor integration, and all aspects of building and supporting research and food manufacturing / indoor agriculture equipment

  • Collaborate with other Engineers as well as Research Scientists and R&D Operators on the Pilot Team in research and in enabling pilot-scale indoor agriculture.

  • Be a technical engineering resource and problem solver including:

    • Writing / modifying PLC code, HMI interfaces, data logs, and more.

    • Specifying / testing / Integrating sensors for controlled environment agriculture such as humidity, gas concentration, temperature, airspeed, etc.

    • Working with industrial utility systems such as steam (gas and electric), compressed air, HVAC units, and filtered air clean spaces.

    • Design of fixtures and small work cells for continuous improvement of R&D Operator workflows

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Willingness to be hands-on with prototype development and iterative design philosophy

  • Experience in the design/build of novel equipment preferable in food manufacturing or indoor controlled environment agriculture

  • Possess excellent communication skills, comfortable working in a multidisciplinary environment and on research / prototypical equipment

  • Ability to identify and effectively communicate with project stakeholders

  • Exceptional organizational skills and appropriate attention to detail for the task

  • Familiar with fundamentals of project management

  • Experience with statistical process control and quantitative quality analysis

  • Familiarity with CAD; Ability to create complex technical drawings for internal or external use

  • Enjoys the challenge of unfamiliar tasks; Learns quickly when facing new problems

  • Be a team player, capable of leading and following as needed to achieve goals

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Experience transitioning novel processes from research to commercial-scale applications

  • Experience in contractor management

  • Experience scaling new technology and leveraging existing technologies for novel processes

  • PLC Programming related to equipment function, flexibility to learn new languages when needed

  • Understanding of environmental control as related to growth chambers and industrial controls and sensors related to living systems or agriculture

  • Capable of project planning and management to ensure timelines are sufficient and milestones remain on schedule to meet expectations

  • Experience with GAP / GMP and engineering for food manufacturing

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Agricultural Technology, or 2-year technical degree with 5+ years working in a technical field.
