About Us
Iron Ox is reimagining the modern farm, utilizing robotics and AI to grow fresh, consistent, and responsibly farmed produce for everyone. Our experienced team of growers, plant scientists, engineers, and innovators are passionate about deeply understanding and developing this new wave of technology to feed an ever-growing population.
Our mission at Iron Ox is dedicated to addressing some of the most significant issues in food security, now and in the future. We’re focused on sustainable, scalable food production for a changing climate and an ever-growing population.
The Role
As a Product Designer at Iron Ox, you’ll have a unique opportunity to shape the future of automated farming with robots. You’ll lead the design vision and own the interfaces between our greenhouse systems and the people who interact with them. As the first designer on a growing Product Team, you’ll influence how we do design at Iron Ox.
This is a unique service design challenge. It spans from our end customer’s journey of purchasing and using our produce in their own home, all the way to the moment seeds are planted in our custom-built greenhouses. You’ll need to design for multiple organizations like Operations, Plant Scientists, Quality Assurance, Engineering, and for both hardware and software systems. You’ll own the end-to-end design process from research and strategy to prototyping, testing, and post-release iteration. You’ll be an advocate for user-centered design in a highly collaborative organization and interact with the people using what you’ve designed daily.
This is a full-time position. Our main HQ is in San Carlos, and we’re very remote friendly. We’re flexible on how much time you’d spend in the office every week, but expect you to occasionally travel to our greenhouse in Gilroy, CA.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead experience and UI design work on our greenhouse systems with particular focus on software
  • Deeply understand how our Plant Science and Production Operations teams work, and help uncover needs and opportunities to inform overall product strategy
  • Create user flows and prototypes to help the team visualize and think through the problems we need to solve
  • Create high fidelity visuals and collaborate with your peers in engineering to make sure the final implementation meets a high bar for quality
  • Prioritize, plan, and deliver design work on time
  • Effectively communicate design ideas and concepts to a variety of internal stakeholders
  • Help improve our internal design language and design culture within Iron Ox
  • Projects You’d Work on If You Joined Next Week:

  • A prototype for a giant dashboard that we’re installing in the processing area of our greenhouse that would keep our operations staff informed about the tasks they need to get done throughout the day
  • An app that lets our head growers and plant scientists track and visualize product yield and demand, and helps them plan for the upcoming week, month and quarter
  • An interface that lets our robot operators assign a series of tasks to the robots that move plant modules between various stations in the greenhouse
  • A design system that spans packaging and label design, screen design for web and mobile apps, and interfaces to our hardware products
  • We’d Love to Hear From You If You:

  • Have 5+ years of experience as a Product Designer, UX/UI Designer, Interaction Designer, or similar
  • Love tackling big and complex systems-level problems, and are genuinely excited about finding a path through the mess to clear and practical solutions
  • Want to get the big picture right, but also care about the micro-details of user experience
  • Have excellent communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills, and are comfortable presenting design concepts clearly and persuasively
  • Have proficiency with industry-standard design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.
  • Nice-to-haves

  • Experience designing for enterprise tools that involve complex workflows
  • Familiarity with front-end technologies like React, TypeScript, CSS
  • Experience designing interfaces for hardware or robotics applications
  • Experience or deep interest in hardware industrial design, interior design, or internal brand design
  • What We Offer

  • Iron Ox is a small startup with a big dream. You’ll be a part of a team founded on transparency, creativity, and impact on our mission to feed people
  • Competitive compensation and meaningful equity package
  • Medical, vision, and dental insurance
  • 401K
