This is an 18-month full time position 
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Program and Policy Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Fellow for the Program and Policy department. This position will be responsible for assisting with and completing assigned tasks and projects within a specific program area of the organization. The Fellow will help plan and oversee program-based activities, implementing program policies, researching, and gathering resources, and communicating with various stakeholders. This is an 18-month full time position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES BASED ON ROTATIONAL ASSIGNMENTS:

 

Outreach, Engagement and Training 
• Influences and builds relationships with a network of internal and external stakeholders in collaboration with other staff to advance the organization’s priority initiatives;
• Develops strategies and outreach efforts to reach non-traditional stakeholders, including but not limited to historically marginalized, under-represented, or under-served populations;
• Represents the organization and department at various forums, including professional meetings, conferences, and workshops; 
 
State Affairs 
• Supports State Directors with legislative initiatives, direct lobbying, bill tracking, coalition building and grassroots support at the state and local level;
• Works with State Directors to assist with outreach to various stakeholders including local shelters, law enforcement agencies, wildlife sanctuaries, etc., to build support for the organization;
 
Program and Policy
• Work with Companion Animals, Farm Animal Welfare, Wildlife Protection and/or Animal Research Issues to advance programmatic goals including message development, strategy, and developing materials;
• Researches, analyzes, and recommends position on local, state and/or federal legislation or regulations.  Assists with determining legislative targets and campaign strategy; 
• Develops materials for including action alerts, fact sheets, communications to legislators, testimony, and other advocacy and outreach materials; 
• Helps develop stakeholder and grassroots strategy to advance the program or policy effort; 
 
Research for DEI
• Contributes writing and messaging for DEI related media coverage, articles, op-eds, social media, and other venues;
• Conducts online research, and uses books, journal articles, newspaper sources, questionnaires, surveys, polls, and interviews to gather data on impact and intersections with animal welfare;
• Analyzes and interprets patterns and trends;
 
Other
Performs other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.
 
Qualifications and Requirements:
  
• Bachelor’s degree in communications, science (wildlife, psychology, zoology, etc.), public policy, or another related field, or equivalent work experience required;
• A minimum of one (1) year of experience in public policy, communications, research, advocacy, nonprofit operations, or another related field preferred;
• Experience in creating content for earned and owned media;
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook);
• Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
• Strong research, written, and verbal communication skills;
• Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
• Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member in a team environment;
• Willing and able to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends;
• Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
