The role of the Project Engineer is to be the primary technical leader of AeroFarms’ Community Farms program and is responsible for managing the design and deployment of these systems to customers in the community.

The role will be involved in all stages of the program, including design, pre-construction, procurement, installation, and commissioning. A large percentage of work time will be performed on site, especially during the installation and commissioning phases of the project.

The Project Engineer will at times be a client-facing role, coordinating closely with the Business Manager and with the customer’s designated site representatives throughout the process.

The Project Engineer must have demonstrated experience and a track record of success in delivering multi-trade projects across many cross-functional stakeholders. They can perform or delegate tasks as required to execute and fully complete assigned projects including: hardware design review, specification and submittal writing, BOM and design change management, procurement and installation coordination, planning and managing installation labor, and project closeout.

In close coordination with the Business Manager, this individual will be responsible for maintaining stakeholder and customer satisfaction, managing accurate project financial results, and ensuring proper execution of warranty and customer support.

As necessary, the Project Engineer will be expected to provide work direction to subcontractors, electrical installers, technicians, designers, and administration and ensure work performed is in compliance with state, local and federal legal requirements. The Project Engineer should operate on the job with the highest of ethics and ensure AeroFarms staff and subcontractors on the project adhere to all safety standards.

The Project Engineer will report to the Senior Director of Engineering and Construction and will work closely with the Business Manager for the Community Farms program to align deliverables and manage across workstreams related to product design, customer support and maintenance, and system (hardware and software) development.

A successful candidate must be highly skilled in budgeting and scheduling with strong verbal and writing skills. Having experience in food service or manufacturing projects, especially in pre-construction and service support, is a plus. The Project Engineer will typically work on multiple projects simultaneously and must be able to work in a fast‐paced, multi‐task environment, balancing competing priorities and multiple project assignments.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ensures completion of typical hardware and software programming using established standards as required. Provides detailed information to communicate design and operation to AeroFarms staff and subcontractors.
  • Manages change orders by evaluating the contractual scope of work and the impact of issued bulletins, field directives and/or scheduling changes. Communicates both technical and business-related issues with the Community Farm Program Team.
  • Manages the selection, ordering, budget, and delivery schedule of materials to be procured for the projects assigned in conjunction with the Procurement and Design Teams.
  • Assists the Procurement Team in securing pricing and availability from outside vendors and suppliers, mechanical and electrical subcontractors including scope, terms and conditions. May request several bids in pricing process. Oversees subcontractor payment and billing processes.
  • Provides jobsite coordination for panel, wiring, and field device physical locations. Ensures installation is in accordance with AeroFarms standards and project requirements.
  • Provides technical assistance to System Technicians, Electrical Installers and System Designers. Provides technical assistance to subcontractors. Ensures that delegated tasks are done accurately, on-time, billed, within budget and within scope of the contract.
  • Develops project plans and coordinates the required resources to ensure timely and cost effective installation and completion of assigned projects.
  • Arranges site-specific training for owner/operator on the total system with vendors. Provides proper documentation and manuals for system operation.
  • Develops and maintains viable long-term relationships with contractors, clients, consultants and subcontractors. Attends job progress meetings as required.
  • Follows all safety standards and has the highest regard for employee and subcontractor safety.
  • May manage a small team of designers and technicians as direct reports, requiring management experience and interpersonal skills.


  • Minimum of a technical Associates Degree with five years of field experience in project engineering and installation.
  • Proficiency in writing and reviewing specification and submittal documentation in conjunction with the Design team.
  • Ability to identify issues on projects and communicate them to the Program Team before they become problems.
  • Ability to plan, perform, and communicate work independently, especially the ability to create schedules and maintain budgets.
  • Can communicate technical material to a non-technical audience.
  • Knowledge of controls software and programming techniques, including PLC, Networking, and SCADA systems, and especially how their roles interact with the overall project.

Preferred Traits

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD to assist design team in modifications or improvements.
  • Knowledge of pumping and irrigation equipment, how to troubleshoot them, and their electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, including panel wiring and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and PDF editing software such as Adobe or Bluebeam.
