Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms. Today, our foundry is developing over 40 different organisms to make different products across multiple industries.
Ginkgo is continuously crossing new frontiers of biological engineering and we have a record of delivering what was, until recently, thought impossible. Now, our expansion into mammalian cell engineering promises to push our boundaries even further, and so we’re looking for pioneering engineers to make Ginkgo’s new mammalian cell foundry a success.
We’re searching for remarkable scientists and engineers, with the skills and work ethic to support our gene therapy projects. As a Senior Research Associate, you bring a wealth of knowledge in Adeno-Associated Virus (AAV) packaging and production, and a strong aptitude to collaborate cross-functionally. You are a driven and organized team member, who is flexible and able to re-prioritize with the changing demands of a fast-paced environment. Your role is integral to the continued growth of our Mammalian Foundry team.
Please note: this role requires the willingness and ability to share occasional weekend cell culture duties, as well as the flexibility to be onsite at both our Seaport and Cambridge locations.
Support senior scientists and engineers in advancing gene therapy projects by executing lab-based mammalian cell experiments
Significant hands-on experience to produce research-grade AAV using the 293 system; knowledge of lentivirus, baculovirus or other production systems is a plus
Analyze vector-specific characteristics including packaging efficiency and product quality, as impacted by packaging and inverted terminal repeat (ITR) plasmid and integrity
Work closely with analytical characterization of viral preps
Integrate screens into Ginkgo’s automation and software platforms with fellow engineers
Present results at cross-functional team meetings
Generate, analyze, and record high-quality data using Ginkgo LIMS, documentation, and database tools
Maintain laboratory records, and contribute to laboratory organization and maintenance
Desired Experience and Capabilities
B.S. in a STEM field with 4+ years hands-on laboratory experience, or M.S. in a STEM field with 2+ years hands-on laboratory experience
Significant experience in AAV packaging and production
Fluency in mammalian cell culture, including assessments of cell health and viability
Some experience with qPCR and dPCR
Strong organizational, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills
Comfort in a fast-paced environment and ability to adjust workload based on changing priorities, coupled with a demonstrated eagerness to learn new things
Additional Preferred Capabilities (desired, but not essential):
Some experience with recombinant DNA cloning techniques such as restriction cloning, Golden Gate assembly, Gibson, and PCR-based assembly
Familiarity with laboratory automation
Familiarity with data analysis platforms such as Python, R, and/or JMP
Experience in an industry setting

We also feel that it’s important to point out the obvious here – there’s a serious lack of diversity in our industry, and that needs to change. Our goal is to help drive that change. Ginkgo is deeply committed to diversity, equality, and inclusion in all of its practices, especially when it comes to growing our team. Our culture promotes inclusion and embraces how rewarding it is to work with people from all walks of life.
We’re developing a powerful biological engineering platform, so we must remain mindful of the many ways our technology can – and will – impact people around the world. We care about how our platform is used, and having a diverse team to build it gives us the best chance that it’s something we’ll be proud of as it continues to grow. Therefore, it’s critical that we incorporate the diverse voices and visions of all those who play a role in the future of biology.
It is the policy of Ginkgo Bioworks to provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and employment applicants.
