Boston, MA

Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms. We are seeking genetic engineers to improve and scale our existing technologies, and define and develop the next set of genetic technologies that will lie at the center of the foundry.
As a molecular scientist on the Build team, you will collaborate with a mixed team of software developers, process engineers, and biologists to improve and develop new methods to assemble DNA quickly. You have a demonstrated ability to evolve a process in response to changing technology and demands, and you excel at communicating these improvements and managing change with stakeholders across technical teams. You are driven to stay current on advancements in molecular biology tools and microbial cell engineering, in order to advance our high-throughput processes, while also mentoring your fellow team members.
Please note: Applicants are being reviewed on a rolling basis, to join our team in 2022.

Responsibilites

  • Provide troubleshooting support to several high throughput molecular biology pipelines, including development, operation and maintenance of protocols, training of junior researchers, data collection and data interpretation.
  • Continually research new molecular biology methods and advise on which DNA assembly methods are most feasible to introduce to our services (we have a particular interest in ultra high throughput methods)
  • Maintain excellent customer service with our internal project teams requesting work from us
  • Build new high throughput molecular biology services in collaboration with junior scientists, software engineers and automation engineers
  • Provide guidance to junior and senior researchers based upon your previous experience.
  • Jump in and help with whatever is needed to get the job done: bench-top molecular biology, moving furniture, database cleanup, you never know!
  • Possibly manage direct reports depending on experience
  • Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent in molecular biology, microbiology, genetics or relevant field.
  • Several years of experience using molecular biology, automated liquid handling robots and custom software.
  • Ability to work well with a team in a fast paced-environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to summarize and act quickly and efficiently.
  • Strong desire for further understanding.
  • Enjoy customer service and explaining concepts to a variety of audiences.
  • Penchant for teaching concepts in an open and collaborative environment.
