Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms.
 
As an Operations NGS Scientist you will support Ginkgo’s Operations platform by running multiple qPCR protocols, NGS library making and sequencing methods daily.  You will be contributing to SOP development and improvement. You will contribute to the development of quality control and introducing controls to the multiple services. In addition, you will collaborate with multiple teams to improve automated processes, and manage entry level scientists during weekend and evening shifts. Your role will be critical for developing operational services at Ginkgo.

Responsibilities

  • Management of team members at the weekend and the evening shift
  • Hands-on molecular biology work for processing NGS sample prep technology, qPCR and DNA extractions
  • Strong understanding of NGS technologies and their applications including sample preparation, quantification, sequencing (ideally with Illumina), data QC and interpretation
  • Deep knowledge of fundamental molecular biology techniques such as qPCR and DNA extractions
  • Experience with robotics, high throughput automation, and software tracking systems
  • Hands on troubleshooting and problem-solving molecular biology and NGS experiments and troubleshooting workflows
  • Contributing to the development of innovative techniques for NGS sample preparation
  • Monitoring SOPs and keeping track of lab organization and equipment
  • Working with team members to deliver and communicate QC results according to timelines and monitor quality issues
  • Troubleshoot complex issues quickly, effectively and able to prioritize
  • Coordinate and work with other teams in a highly matrixed environment
  • Ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced, dynamic and results-oriented environment
  • Desired Experience and Capabilities

  • PhD in molecular biology, genomics or other relevant field with 1-2 years relevant experience.
  • Ability to work weekends and evening shifts (4 days x 10 hours)
  • Demonstrated mastery of NGS including DNA/RNA sequencing library preparation and quantification, familiarity with Illumina sequencing platforms and extensive experience in molecular biology (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, ddPCR and other DNA manipulations)
  • Experience writing and monitoring SOPs
  • Thorough, self-motivated, and scientifically driven with proficient reasoning skills in experimental design and data interpretation
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and ability to troubleshoot
  • Additional Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience managing entry level staff scientists
  • Automation and robotics experience
  • Operations Driven for process improvements
  • Ability to step out of comfort zone and prioritize
  • Experience with microbial, yeast cultures, strain design and DNA manipulations
