Indigo Ag is a mission-driven company dedicated to harnessing nature to help farmers sustainably feed the planet. We innovate across a breadth of technology and science disciplines to help enhance agriculture’s long-term sustainability and profitability and mitigate the climate crisis. We seek to positively impact the world through the digital and biological solutions we bring to the market, creating a more resilient earth, healthier economies, and thriving communities. Our people build partnerships, explore the science, and engineer the technology to help grow the future of sustainable agriculture. The only way to achieve it is through a unique combination of expertise – from Fortune 500 to academia, soil science and agriculture, to tech start-ups.
About the role:
The Sustainability Science & Modeling team connects cutting edge science and research with quantification methodologies at scale through deeply cross disciplinary work. We define the science requirements behind high-quality carbon credits, collaborate with scientists across academia and industry, and work on world class data sets and experiments to advance the science around sustainability and agriculture. We are looking for a Scientist to support our Sustainability Science and Modeling team, which develops the scientific foundation that our technology platform and tools are based on.
Our team works with experts in software engineering, policy, agronomy, design, product, and data science to help farmers get paid for sustainable practices, for example creating credits for practice changes that draws carbon from the air into the soil and reduces emissions (often called Carbon Farming or regenerative agriculture).
In order to quantify impact rigorously and cost effectively we collect data on farming practices, remote sensing, and other data sources that we combine with direct measurement data to model and analyze GHG and soil carbon outcomes and other sustainability attributes. We are using science, agriculture, data, technology, and software engineering to fight climate change and support grower success when making sustainability-driven decisions.
As a Scientist at Indigo you will:
Support life cycle assessment (LCA) initiatives across the company
Assist in foundational LCA framework decisions for program development across many sectors (Renewable Fuel Standard, food-based supply chains, farm-level grain scores)
Develop specifications for engineers around LCA system boundaries, Life Cycle Impact Assessment methods, and allocation/co-product procedures for various programs
Collaborate with other scientists, Product Managers, UX designers, policy experts, data scientists, and engineers to drive our products forward
Be a member on a team that values inquiry, rigor, and care for each other
Coordinate with Product Managers on science and modeling subject matter experts (SMEs) workload and squad time allocation
You might be a good fit if you:
Have performed LCAs in an industry setting (advanced academia experience can apply)
Have working knowledge of the Renewable Fuel Standard and experience in Low Carbon Fuel Standard models (GREET, Cal-GREET, FD-CIC)
Have specific LCA experience in agricultural and/or food supply chain sectors
Have intimate knowledge of LCA standards (ISO, GHG Protocol) and databases (ecoinvent, GaBi, US LCI)
Own strategic and organizational problems end-to-end, and are willing to pick up whatever knowledge you’re missing to get the job done
Are detail-oriented, and like to get the system working but know when perfection is becoming the enemy of good enough
Enjoy collaborating across multiple disciplines, including science, product, design, engineering and data science
Know how to communicate in a remote-first environment
Have worked with modern web technologies and project management software (e.g., Jira, Confluence); familiarity or experience with Agile systems and matrixed organizations is a plus
Have experience in Python and/or SQL. Direct experience in one or more public cloud offerings (AWS, Azure) is a plus
Believe in the model of servant leadership and extreme ownership
