Senior DevOps Engineer 18 views

Boston, MA

Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms. Today, our foundry is developing over 40 different organisms to make different products across multiple industries.
We’re creating the codebase, compiler, and debugger for biology. We have built a strong set of internal software tools, automation, and processes that enable high-throughput genetic engineering across multiple species. We want to make them better, more powerful, more scalable, and more effective, while making them easier to use, manage, and deploy.
We’re looking for motivated and driven DevOps Engineers to join our rapidly growing team. With your software development and Linux operations skills, you will be critical to helping us maintain and scale our cloud infrastructure that deploys and operates Ginkgo’s proprietary scientific software.
As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you have a background in development, operations, and implementations. You also have experience programming in languages to script installation, configuration, and provisioning, such as Bash, Node.js, Java, or Perl, with Python being the preferred language at Ginkgo. As a leader on the DevOps team, you will be providing continuous delivery solutions in a cloud environment and must have experience with the core suite of tools used to manage different cloud providers, especially AWS.

  • Assist developers, foundry teams, and IT with DevOps operations, helping to scale and deploy our systems both locally and in the cloud
  • Apply best practices to ensure fully working dev, staging, and production environments using Gitlab-CI, Docker, Ansible, Jenkins, Cloud Formation, and other tools
  • Design, build and maintain CI/CD, testing, and operations infrastructure for our systems
  • Work closely with scientists, IT, and developers to resolve outages and implement changes to avoid future issues
  • Evaluate and leverage AWS cloud and deployment technologies
  • Take responsibility for applying software-specific knowledge to assigned projects to ensure proper design, implementation, and documentation
  • Ensure internal and external third-party resources comply with Ginkgo’s  SDLC methodology, quality policy, and procedures, to ensure the delivery of a highly scalable and secure solution that is optimized for performance
  • Utilize development resources and version control systems to work in a collaborative manner
  • Participate in code reviews and adhere to secure coding standards and industry best practices
  • Desired Experience and Capabilities

  • BS or MS degree in computer engineering or related field, or equivalent work experience
  • At least 4-6 years of coding and/or sysadmin experience, ideally including hands-on application development or operational system administration in a software development organization
  • Strong understanding of application development methodologies
  • Proven track record of excellent customer service delivery, including acting as a technical project lead working with developers, operators, and users to efficiently troubleshoot and resolve challenging problems in addition to providing status updates to the project manager
  • Familiarity with infrastructure automation tools such as Jenkins, GoCD, Terraform, Artifactory, Nexus, Ansible Tower, Puppet, Chef, InSpec, etc. a big plus
  • Working knowledge of networking, security, and AWS in a development-through-production environment working with a broad portfolio of AWS infrastructure tools (CloudFormation, VPC,EBS, S3, EC2, Lambdas, IAM, Route 53, etc)
  • High level of enthusiasm for working with the best scientists and engineers to further develop Ginkgo’s foundry and help achieve our mission
  • Previous experience working in the life sciences industry a plus
  • Ownership and escalation of relevant technical risks and issues

We also feel that it’s important to point out the obvious here – there’s a serious lack of diversity in our industry, and that needs to change. Our goal is to help drive that change. Ginkgo is deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its practices, especially when it comes to growing our team. Our culture promotes inclusion and embraces how rewarding it is to work with people from all walks of life.
We’re developing a powerful biological engineering platform, so we must remain mindful of the many ways our technology can – and will – impact people around the world. We care about how our platform is used, and having a diverse team to build it gives us the best chance that it’s something we’ll be proud of as it continues to grow. Therefore, it’s critical that we incorporate the diverse voices and visions of all those who play a role in the future of biology.
It is the policy of Ginkgo Bioworks to provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and employment applicants.
