The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Senior Director, Celebrity Engagement for the Philanthropy department. In this position you will be responsible for providing leadership and oversight of celebrity and influencer strategy across the Humane Society family of organizations. You will work to recruit, engage and integrate celebrities, the entertainment community and other influencers into enterprise-wide advocacy, communications and fundraising efforts to further programmatic mission, bolster brand and profile and meet fundraising goals.

You will be responsible for:

 

  • Working closely with Program teams to develop short-, medium- and long-term strategy for celebrity and influencer engagement that is authentic, growth-oriented, and aligned with our global priorities, cultivating inspiring, authentic, newsworthy opportunities for celebrities and influencers to support the organization’s priorities and mission. Growing the organization’s overall celebrity/influencer base, focusing on developing their long-term engagement with our enterprise; incorporating DEI goals into strategy while ensuring that the organization makes full use of current celebrity supporter talents;
  • Remaining up to date on enterprise priorities to communicate information in an inspiring, engaging way that builds brand awareness with celebrities and influencers. Resolving complex problems and implementing solutions that require inter-organizational and interdepartmental coordination, balancing program goals with celebrity strategy;
  • Overseeing the development of an enterprise-wide celebrity/influencer database to track relationships, touches, celebrity interests and ensure overall alignment across a complex family of organizations. Coordinating closely with other staff who manage celebrity relationships or intersect with celeb/influencer needs;
  • In coordination with the Events team, providing expertise in celebrity strategy for events and special projects. Assisting in script writing and drafting copy for celebrities, sound bites, liaising with PR firms to manage red carpet events, photo and news release distributions, social media expectations, etc.;
  • Managing a team of professionals, setting strategic goals and ensuring they are met, monitoring performance, and fostering an environment with a high morale that encourages growth and development. Championing a positive, collaborative work culture;
  • Working closely with the Communications team regarding media relations needs, including news media, social media, nonfiction television and film media; encouraging broadcast and film portrayals of the work and leadership of the Humane Society family of organizations, and providing leadership in matters of entertainment media;
  • Overseeing the budget for the program with full accountability; providing reports to the CDMO, board and other stakeholders on program results as needed.

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent work experience required;
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressive functional experience required;
  • Management and budget oversight experience in a related field required;
  • Experience in celebrity/influencer relationship management strongly preferred;
  • Thorough knowledge of and commitment to animal protection issues;
  • Thorough knowledge of the entertainment industry and understanding of the various influencers in the animal welfare movement;
  • Highest levels of integrity and ethics, with outstanding personal credibility required;
  • The ability to establish accountabilities and expectations and manage performance to achieve results;
  • The ability to build/foster relationships by reinforcing trust and respect, and demonstrating high standards of tact, diplomacy and discretion;
  • Exceptional and well-developed communication, presentation, and negotiation skills together with strong persuasion and influencing skills. Requires the ability to interact with internal clients and external stakeholders with aplomb;
  • Knowledge of effective budget development and management processes, as well as the ability to translate strategic thinking into action plans and related outcomes;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving;
  • Demonstrated propensity to be creative, collaborative, proactive, and self-motivated in the execution and completion of assigned accountabilities;
  • Flexibility and the ability to manage multiple and often changing priorities and issues;
  • Technical proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (i.e., WORD, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook);
  • Willing and able to travel as necessary.

 

This is a remote position based from a home office, preferably in Los Angeles or New York City.
