Your role: 
We are seeking a Team Lead/Director of Food Science with a passion for developing great tasting sustainable dairy foods.  You will help lead and train members of our research team on experiments to enhance our knowledge of ingredients and processing on flavor, texture, and shelf life as well as lead the scale up of our products from bench top through commercialization and support our intellectual property portfolio.  This position includes working with inside and outside resources including operations, suppliers, consultants, and academic institutions.  

Expected outcomes

  • Help grow, lead, and train the food science team.
  • Support the development of formulas, processes, and specifications for new food products.
  • Completion of experiments that support patent filings including comparing plant sourced alternatives to animal ingredients and products.
  • Successfully scale up robust formulas and processes.
  • Manage projects and communicate findings to cross functional partners and stakeholders.
  • Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to team members developing processes and formulas for great tasting food products.
  • Manage projects from concept generation through commercial scale-up using experimental design and maintaining accurate records.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory, pilot plant, and kitchen equipment in a safe manner following established protocols.
  • Lead pilot plant trials and product scale-up including scheduling, ordering ingredients, and organizing meetings with cross functional teams.
  • Prepare prototypes and samples in a food safe manner while following Good Manufacturing Practices.
  • Critically evaluate samples and help complete internal and external sensory and analytical testing.
  • Initiate formulation and process adjustments as needed.
  • Identify opportunities for new research and products.
  • Operate independently on daily assignments with minimal direction.
  • Use basic computer skills including effective use of G Suite and Microsoft Office.
  • Perform other duties/responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or management.
  • Required skills and experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Food Science, Dairy Science or related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in food product development or related experience in dairy foods.
  • Experience managing a small team of 1-3 direct reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to manage projects while balancing multiple priorities.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to multiple situations (e.g. scientists, chefs, plant workers and managers).
  • Experience advancing initiatives through different stages of commercialization.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking & problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) and contribute to a team environment to deliver results.
  • Comfortable in pilot plant and plant settings, at internal and external locations.
  • Preferred experience

  • Graduate Degree in Engineering, Food Science, Dairy Science, or related field.
  • 5 years hands-on experience with process cheese products or plant-based cheeses containing vegetable proteins.
  • Experience with dairy flavors, starches, and hydrocolloids.
  • Demonstrated success in scaling up product launches.
  • Successful launch of new dairy products.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, collaboration and influence skills.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic work environment; desire to learn new concepts quickly and apply in productive ways.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Effective decision making with limited data.
  • Travel requirements

  • Travel to manufacturing sites, suppliers, and technical meetings.
  • Estimated travel: less than 25%
